Chronic pain is often approached as a problem that must be located somewhere in the body and then repaired.

That approach can be appropriate when there is an identifiable injury, inflammation, or disease. But for persistent pain, the clinical picture is often more complicated.

Pain is produced by the nervous system in response to information from the body, while also being influenced by attention, expectations, emotions, previous experiences and the perceived meaning of a physical sensation.
