Dr. John Sarno challenged this approach decades ago. He believed that many chronic pain conditions involve psychological and emotional processes that influence physical symptoms. His theory, known as Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS), placed stress, repressed emotions and the nervous system at the centre of pain treatment.
