Psychological trauma can leave effects that extend far beyond emotional wellbeing.
For some people, the consequences of traumatic experiences may persist long after the original event, influencing sleep, pain, stress regulation and physical health. The relationship is complex, however, and trauma should not be regarded as a single explanation for chronic illness.
From a mind-body perspective, the important question is how psychological stress can interact with biological systems over time. Research increasingly suggests that prolonged traumatic stress can affect the nervous, endocrine and immune systems, potentially contributing to vulnerability to a range of physical conditions.
